What is Free Comic Book Day and How to Participate in 2024

Free Comic Book Day is Saturday, May 4 2024, which many of you might also know is Star Wars Day. May the 4th be with you! This will be only the fourth time that Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) has landed on the 4th, and the next time won’t happen until 2030, so make the most of it this year! There’s often a film associated with FCBD as well but it hasn’t been announced yet. Find a participating shop near you.

I’ve been going to Free Comic Book Day for many years, and it’s always amazing. In addition to free comics, most comic book shops will have activities, guests, events, and food trucks, but what each store does depends on the store and its resources. For example, my favorite local comic book shop usually has a little car show, special appearances from local comic book artists and authors, and they bring in an ice cream food truck.

Free Comic Book Day is an annual event celebrated on the first Saturday of May, where comic book shops worldwide offer customers free comic books. This event is significant to the comic book industry as it encourages new readers to discover the world of comics and promotes the medium.

So let’s explore Free Comic Book Day in-depth, its history, significance, and impact on the comic book industry. We’ll also review some tips on making the most of this geeky holiday!

The Origins of Free Comic Book Day

Free Comic Book Day was first proposed by comic book retailer Joe Field in 2001 in his column in Comics & Games Retailer magazine. Field was inspired by Free Scoop Night at the Baskin-Robbins next to his store. The industry loved the idea, so Joe worked with Diamond Comic Distributors to host the first event the day after the first Spider-Man movie opened. You can read more in this 2005 interview with Joe Field.

The first Free Comic Book Day was held on May 4, 2002, and was supported by a small group of four publishers; Marvel Comics, DC Comics, Dark Horse Comics, and Image Comics. The first free comics were a reprint of the 2000 Ultimate Spider-Man #1, Star Wars Tales: A Jedi’s Weapon, Tomb Raider #1+1⁄2, and Justice League Adventures #1. More than 2000 stores participated in the first year, with more than 2 million comics given away.

The event was an immediate success, which led to its expansion in subsequent years, with more publishers joining in and offering a wider variety of free comics. By 2015, 2,340 retailers ordered 5.6 million comic books.

Today, Free Comic Book Day is celebrated in over 60 countries and is supported by major publishers, small press publishers, and independent creators. It has become an important event in the comic book industry, promoting the medium to new readers and encouraging existing readers to explore new titles.
